“Washy” means feeble, thin like watery soup. “Wishy-washy” is a humorous intensification through doubling—we get “shilly-shally” from “shall I?” in a similar way.
When facing a difficult conversation, many people vacillate rather than booking the tough talk. I’ve had two clients in two days rocking back and forth on the horns of a dilemma (ouch!) They need less wish (just hoping the problem would go away) and more wash (getting hands dirty by confronting the issue).
