Instead of dreading objective-setting for the next quarter, seize the perfect moment to give your team a salutary shock. Read on for relevant ideas and events, including a new strategy workshop I’m planning!
OKRs, 4DX, WIG, SWOT – it doesn’t matter what you call it, setting goals is a quarterly nightmare for many of you, with endless estimation sessions, wearying debate over features, and usually more confusion about company and product direction at the end than at the beginning. If this is your experience, you’re missing the point: the organisation needs a spark for debate, not a roadmap to slavishly follow. We want to galvanise the team, a term that comes from an Italian bloke who zapped frog legs with electricity and got them to jump. That’s what you need: a short, sharp, surprising message that leads to immediate shifts in thinking, and most importantly, specific actions whose progress you can check on frequently. And don’t worry if you’re not in charge of the strategy setting process— you can still practise “adverse possession” and define the message yourself.
